Biff, too, brings some friends for backup. This is an impressive effort from the woman who virtually created the young-adult genre. Patty is Rusty-James' girlfriend until half-way through the book when she learns that Rusty-James was seen fooling around with a black-haired girl at a party. Steve refuses because he cannot afford to do anything that would cause him to get into more trouble. Ironically, this makes The Outsiders more likely to be read. Too simple they might say. I hope that makes some sense. Motorcycle Boy tells Rusty that while he was in California, he saw their mother. In The Outsiders, the larger meaning seemed to be that there was no real difference between the social groups and the idea that anyone, from any group, can be a hero. He recruits Motorcycle Boy and Steve to go out drinking, also to help him forget this terrible day. One fight has serious consequences, and Rusty-James gets sent to reform school.
Rusty-James says that people look at him, stop, and then look again. The greater influence of nurture versus nature? And I still want to be The Motorcycle Boy even though I get nervous as a passenger on a scooter as soon as it racks up 30 miles per.

I think an important part of The Motorcycle Boy's timelessness has to do with the different ways that people perceive him. He is said to have an obsession with motorcycles and is away from home for long periods of time. Plot[ edit ] Rusty-James runs into his old friend, Steve Hays, at the beach. When Patty finds out that Rusty had been with another girl at the party, she breaks up with him. Rusty goes to the pet store, and the two watch the fish. His father calls him a "disinherited prince" and the cop view spoiler [who eventually kills him hide spoiler ]thinks he's a menace to society. Steve Hays is Rusty-James' best friend.
In contrast, Rusty James is definitely a product of his environment, with the exception in that everyone is so disconnected from each other and he longs for the good ol' days of gangs. Also, the consequences of those actions were more standard and less nuanced than in real life.
