Lam is a funny and mischievous Miles who knows more than he shows. In doing so, he demonstrates the way in which a collective creation appropriated the lives of its subjects and changed their own interpretation of it. On second thought, it's just as well that it wasn't. Living with and working alongside farm families, the company collectively created a play about them and performed it in a local barn. His resolutely restrained approach could have resulted in dullness, but instead blossoms into a stirringly beautiful study of damaged lives. By that time, however, the altercations are gripping enough to sweep reservations aside. Art becomes life. Johnson does a good job as stoic Morgan, rarely raising his voice even when he comes to a boil. It would, in fact, destroy their friendship. Both the Wharton and Steinbeck works are short novels -- and, curiously, Healey's endeavor feels like a short novel that's been adapted for the stage. Small, quiet and smart are welcome qualities in this summer of raucous comedies and musicals. It subsequently toured Canada, heavily influencing Canadian playwriting and performance.
